Portrait of a Noble Lady
ca. 1635
Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn
The pink flesh colour of her lighted face is particularly emphasized. The volumes are shaped by toning the cold grey and warmer, transparently-shaded hues. The figure is made attractive by the expressive tonality that confers a life-like quality to her complexion and melancholy gaze. Despite the rapid brush-strokes, a reserved realistic impression has been achieved.
