Ciborium
Cologne; 1st half 13th c.
The ciborium is shaped like a shallow cylinder on a cone-shaped stem. The cone-shaped lid ends in a rock crystal decoration. In the cylinder there is a semi-circular container for the host. The outside has five regularly spaced medallions, between them a geometrical pattern of three horizontal bands. Four medallions are embossed in low relief and show the most important scenes from the life of Christ: Annunciation, Nativity, Crucifixion and Resurrection.
